Smart Airports 2017: Green airport design

Running alongside Inter Airport Europe 2017 in Munich, Smart Airports has seen a stellar line up of airport representatives and executives from the aviation industry lead enlightening discussions throughout the second day of the conference.

With modern airports of all sizes providing a vital role in modern socio-economies, delivering connectivity, accessibility and facilitating commerce, one of the lead discussions of the day was based on Green Airport design.

Udo Bradersen, environmental manager at Hamburg Airport, was joined by Marc Flamme, aircraft servicing manager, ADELTE and Jan Vana, director of WheelTug to discuss how the industry must build and develop successful infrastructure assets with a conscience.

While Flamme focused on alternate solutions to Auxiliary Power Units (APU) and Vana spoke about the merits of WheelTug, an industry game-changing aircraft technology that will reduce aircraft operating costs, airport ramp operating costs, total ground time of aircraft and enhance customer service values as well as minimise tractor or engine power to move aircraft around, it was Bradersen who drove home the desperate need for airports to reduce CO2 emissions.

Bradersen, who has been instrumental in environmental management, legislation, air quality and reducing Hamburg Airport’s carbon footprint stated that simple measures to reduce CO2 in the airport include: energy efficient lighting, preconditioning of the air, improved chiller technology, ventilation control, solar energy on roofs, modernised heat supply and renewable energy use.

Commenting further that “there comes a point when further improvements within an airport are only achieved by larger investments” he pointed out that inevitably its necessary for airport leaders to look beyond existing airport infrastructure and consider “entirely new buildings with new design concepts.”

Lacking experience with new technology, collection of accurate and detailed basic data, regular data evaluation and rising emission levels despite all efforts were all cited as major challenges in the fight against rising CO2 levels within airports.
