Sacramento International Airport, in California, has seen the busiest January, February and March on record, which the airport attributes to the addition of new nonstop destinations and added seat capacity.

In March, the airport marked 48 consecutive months of increased passenger traffic year-over-year. Close to 2.6 million passengers travelled through the airport in January, February and March, a 12.1% increase over the same period in 2017 and passenger traffic in 2018 has surpassed previous airport records for first-quarter enplanements.

“We are seeing unmistakable momentum which we expect to continue through the end of the year,” said director of airports, John Wheat. “We are very grateful to our airline partners, airport employees, and our customers for helping to make this happen.”

The airport said growth was fuelled by the addition of new nonstop destinations, added seat capacity on existing flights, and a robust regional economy echoing the nationwide popularity of commercial air travel.

Sacramento International Airport believes this momentum is expected to continue with the addition of new nonstop routes, including a seasonal service to Boston on JetBlue from 3 May, daily service to Orlando from 6 May on Southwest, a daily service to Vancouver on Air Canada from 17 May and seasonal service to Cabo San Lucas on Alaska Airlines running from 26 May to 11 August and 10 November to 29 December.

The airport served 10.9 million passengers in 2017, surpassing the previous record of 10.7 million set in 2007. It is expected to serve at least 11.5 million passengers in 2018.
