The Inter Airport Europe Awards acknowledge the aviation industry’s best recent innovations, products and equipment with the interTERMINAL category representing terminal operations, infrastructure and technical installations. Vanderlande’s flexible baggage logistics solution based on automated guided vehicles (AGV) fought off strong competition to secure its place as winner of the 2017 Inter Airport Europe Innovation Award in the interTERMINAL category.
Showcased at Inter Airport Europe on 10 October 2017, FLEET (Vanderlande’s new baggage logistics solution) replaces the need for fixed conveyors and sorting systems. Each individual vehicle carries a single bag and determines its route through an airport.
In addition, a vehicle can be given priority, which safeguards the delivery of time-critical baggage on time. ‘Swarm’ intelligence – combined with advanced data analytics – enables continuous adaptation and improvement of the solution. Described as ‘flexible’ and ‘resilient’, FLEET is scalable for any sized airport. Holland’s Lelystad Airport, which in 2015 was given the go-ahead to develop into an airport that could facilitate 45,000 flights per year, has signed up to implement the innovative new solution for baggage handling within its terminal.
Not only will it provide high levels of flexibility and allow Lelystad to change seamlessly in the future to match its business requirements, the solution will guarantee shorter project lead times and consume up to 50% less energy compared to traditional baggage handling systems.
With its systems active in 600 airports, Vanderlande’s baggage handling systems move 3.7 billion pieces of luggage around the world per year so the Dutch company is well versed in providing value-added logistic process automation at airports.
“We have been working tremendously hard over the past year to develop this innovative new concept. It is with a sense of pride and satisfaction that I was able to collect the prize on behalf of my talented and dedicated colleagues,” said Andrew Manship, executive vice-president, Vanderlande at the Inter Airport awards ceremony, which took place on the morning of 10 October.
