Departure flights at Hong Kong International Airport have been cancelled for a second day as anti-government protesters continue demonstrations at the airport.
Over 150 flights were cancelled on Monday 12 after the airport was filled with demonstrators amid ongoing protests, with Secretary for Transport & Housing Frank Chan commenting that the decision to suspend operations at the airport was made due to safety concerns.
The airport re-opened for flights on the morning of Tuesday 13 but later in the day flight check-in services were suspended. The Airport Authority of Hong Kong released a statement reading: “Airport operations at Hong Kong International Airport have been seriously disrupted, all departure flights have been cancelled.”
Airport officials advised passengers to leave the terminal buildings and for all affected passengers to contact their respective airlines.
Hong Kong International Airport is one of the busiest airports in the world, and saw 75.1 million passengers and handled 428,870 flight movements in 2018/19.
