The introduction of new security lanes at George Best Belfast City Airport has seen the transportation hub slash the average passenger processing time to just 6 minutes.

The new lanes are part of a £15 million infrastructure investment at the airport to refurbish the security search area upgrade the departure lounge including its retail, food and beverage offerings.

New electronic boarding pass gates can now process multiple passengers and new scanning equipment has seen queues at peak times disappear.

“We want to exceed our passengers’ expectations,” said Mark Beattie, operations director at Belfast City Airport. “The new security search system has to date received hugely positive feedback from passengers,” he added.

Much of the security process has been automated and the airport has been monitoring passenger flows over the past few weeks. “We’re confident 6 minutes is the average time it should take to pass through the new security system,” Beattie offered.

As part of the investment, customer seating has also more than doubled, as has airside customer washroom facilities. The investment also includes the purchase of a new fleet of Airport Fire appliances, the first of which arrived in September.
