airBaltic to launch Riga – Lviv link

The Latvian low-fare carrier airBaltic will launch a new direct service from Riga, Latvia to Lviv, Ukraine, on 1 April 2019.

The airline says the new summer seasonal flights will offer convenient connections between the cities, and will be the third airBaltic destination in Ukraine, in addition to Kiev and Odessa.

“By launching new flights from Riga to Lviv, we continue to expand our summer route map and offer more travel opportunities to our passengers. Lviv is one of the most important economic and cultural centres of Ukraine located near the picturesque eastern Carpathian Mountains,” said Martin Gauss, chief executive officer of airBaltic.

The route will be served four times weekly and flights will be operated with a Bombardier Q400 NextGen aircraft.

“Riga Airport is purposefully developing as an international hub, and we are glad that airlines are expanding their route network from Riga,” said chairperson of the Riga International Airport Ilona Lice.

“Ukraine is an interesting destination for both business travellers, culture and art lovers as well as holiday makers. Meanwhile for Ukrainian travellers Riga Airport is a convenient hub for trips to Europe and other countries of the world.

“The attractiveness of this destination is evidenced by the fact that not only airBaltic will open a new route to Lviv, but also Wizzair will start flights to Kiev in March 2019, while Ukrainian Airlines have increased the frequency of existing flights,” Lice added.

The airport has also been seeing strong growth and in the first nine months of the year, the number of passengers handled at Riga airport reached 5.7 million, nearly 17% more than during the same period last year.
