WestJet’s July traffic grows 5% year-over-year

WestJet has announced its traffic results for July 2015, which show the airline carried a record 1.9 million passengers, a 6.5% (or 117,000 person) increase in comparison with the same period last year.July 2015 also saw the carrier set a new single-day record, flying 72,000 guests on 31 July.Revenue passenger miles (RPMs) rose by 5.0% year-over-year from 1.873 billion to 1.966 billion, whilst available seat miles (ASMs) grew by 5.6% from 2.249 billion to 2.374 billion over the same period. This resulted in a load factor of 82.8%, which was down 0.5 percentage points from 83.3% in July 2014.The rise in capacity is due to new routes implemented in July by regional subsidiary WestJet Encore to Halifax, and Sydney, Nova Scotia; Deer Lake, Gander and St John's, Newfoundland and Moncton, New Brunswick.“We are pleased with our strong year-over-year traffic growth as we set a new single-day record, flying 72,240 guests on Friday 31 July,” stated WestJet’s president and CEO, Gregg Saretsky.WestJet’s traffic figures for the year-to-date showed a 1.4 percentage point decrease in load factor from 81.7% for the first seven months of 2014 to 80.3% due to an increase of 6% in ASMs, but only a 4.2% increase in RPMs.The airline achieved an on-time performance rate of 83.8% for the month, an improvement of 2.3 percentage points in comparison with the same period in 2014.
