US Airways reports December and full 2009 traffic for Express subsidiaries

US Airways has reported December 2009 and full calendar year 2009 traffic figures for its two wholly-owned subsidiaries which operate under the US Airways Express brand – Piedmont Airlines and PSA Airlines.

In December, the two carriers generated 160,474,000 revenue passenger miles (RPMs), a drop of 2.3% compared with December 2008’s 164,208,000. Available seat miles (ASMs) totalled 241,318,000, compared with 256,241,000 the previous year, a 5.8% decrease.

The load factor for the month went up 2.4 percentage points to 66.5% from 64.1%, with the carriers transporting 600,537 passengers in December, a 0.3% increase on December 2008’s 602,495

For the whole of 2009, RPMs for the pair reached 2,127,324,000, a 2.0% decrease on 2008’s figure of 2,170,025,000. ASMs were down 3.6% to 3,126,779,000 from 3,244,253,000 for the respective periods.

The annual load factor thus rose by 1.1 pp to 68.0% from 66.9% in 2008. The two airlines carried 7,905,484 passengers in 2009, a 0.8% increase over 2008’s total of 7,839,737.
