Southwest announces December and full 2013 traffic

Southwest Airlines has reported its preliminary traffic statistics for December 2013 and the complete 2013 calendar year.

The company flew 8,975,588,000 revenue passenger miles (RPMs) in December 2013, a 9.8% increase from the 8,174,930,000 RPMs flown in December 2012. Available seat miles (ASMs) increased 3.4% to 10,839,912,000 from the December 2012 level of 10,479,165,000.

The December 2013 load factor was 82.8%, compared with 78.0% in December 2012, a 4.8 percentage point increase. Revenue passengers carried in December 2013 totalled 9,307,789 compared with 8,610,383 in December 2012, a 8.1% increase.

For the full year of 2013, the company flew 104,348,216,000 RPMs, compared with 102,874,979,000 RPMs flown in 2012, an increase of 1.4%. Full year 2013 ASMs increased by 1.7% to 130,344,072 from 128,137,110 for full year 2012.

The 2013 load factor was 80.1%, 0.2 pp down on the 80.3% for full year 2012. Revenue passengers carried in 2013 numbered 108,075,976,000, which was 1.2% fewer than the 109,346,509,000 carried in 2012.
