Southwest Airlines announces June and 1H16 traffic

Southwest Airlines has reported its June and half-year (1H16) preliminary traffic statistics.

The company flew 11,489,804,000 revenue passenger miles (RPMs) in June 2016, an increase of 6.8% from the 10,757,440,000 RPMs flown in June 2015. Available seat miles (ASMs) increased 5.4% to 13,149,697,000 in June 2016, compared with June 2015 ASMs of 12,475,838,000.

The June 2016 load factor was a record for the month of June at 87.4%, up 1.2 percentage points (pp) compared with 86.2% in June 2015. The number of revenue passengers carried in June 2016 was 11,119,189, which was 5.7% more than the 10,520,004 carried in June 2015.

In 1H16, RPMs totalled 61,115,858,000, compared with 56,719,247,000 in 1H15, an increase of 7.8%. ASMs rose by 6.9% to 73,493,431,000 in 1H16 from 1H15’s figure of 68,773,495,000.

The load factor thus increased by 0.7 pp to 83.2% in 1H16, from 82.5% in 1H15. Southwest carried 60,944,448 revenue passengers in 1H16, compared with 57,243,738 in 1H15, an increase of 6.5%.
