US-based American Airlines will purchase 50 A321XLRs, adding the 20 examples to an earlier placed order for 30 A321neos that have been converted to the new long-range narrowbody configuration.

American intends to receive eight examples in 2023, 22 the following year, and 20 in 2025. They will be used across the airline’s network on a variety of routes.

“Adding in some A321XLRs will give us opportunities to do things we haven’t done in the past,” American Airlines president Robert Isom said recently. “I look at places like JFK, Philadelphia, Charlotte and Dallas. Opening up some new markets that will help the network and help us serve our customers better.”

Thirty conversions of existing A321neo orders and 20 aircraft under a purchase agreement. The airline’s move boosts commitments for the new Airbus model to 206 examples.
