Regulators in Indonesia might extend the grounding of the 737 MAX until 2020 as it makes its own decisions over the certification of the aircraft and pilots.
Indonesia civil aviation authority director general Polana Pramesti stated to the press that there were “a lot of issues” to address and it was uncertain whether the aircraft would be allowed to fly in Indonesia this year.
Pramesti said there would stricter certification and simulator training requirements for MAX pilots, including conversion from other 737 types. She added that Boeing must provide reassurances and restore confidence in the MAX aircraft.
He might join a 23 May meeting in Texas planned by the FAA for some 50 other international regulators and stakeholders to discuss the MAX software update programme and related pilot training.
Indonesia was the scene of the first MAX crash, when Lion Air flight JT 610 crashed into the sea in 2018. The Indonesian low-fare carrier has threatened to cancel its additional MAX orders until the issue is resolved.
