Southwest Airlines has reported its preliminary traffic figures for March 2011 and the first quarter of the calendar year.
In March, revenue passenger miles (RPMs) totalled 7,333,003,000, an increase of 9.8% over last March’s 6,676,372,000. Available seat miles (ASMs) were up by 8.9% to 8,982,345,000 from 8,245,430,000.
The load factor rose marginally to 81.6% from 81.0% for the respective periods, while revenue passengers carried numbered 7,933,796, 3.0% up on last March’s 7,702,573.
In the first quarter of this year (1Q11), RPMs were up by 11.9% at 19,195,885,000 from 17,161,713,000, while ASMs were increased by 8.3% to 24,505,674,000 from 22,619,460,000 in 1Q10. The 1Q11 load factor was 78.3%, an increase of 2.4 percentage points over 1Q10’s figure of 75.9%. Revenue passengers carried by Southwest during 1Q11 totalled 21,108,130, compared with 19,976,835 in 1Q10, an increase of 5.7%.
