March 2016 traffic figures announced by Southwest Airlines

Southwest Airlines has reported its March and first quarter 2016 preliminary traffic statistics.

The company flew 10,875,078,000 revenue passenger miles (RPMs) in March 2016, an increase of 6.2% over the 10,240,507,000 RPMs flown in March 2015. Available seat miles (ASMs) increased by 6.1% to 12,852,734,000 in March 2016, compared with March 2015 ASMs of 12,113,609,000.

The March 2016 load factor was a record for the month at 84.6%, following a monior increase from 84.5% in March 2015. The airline carried 10,944,627 revenue passengers, up 5.6% over the 10,363,811 carried last March.

In 1Q16, RPMs totalled 28,408,164,000, compared with 25,860,866,000 in 1Q15, a 9.9% increase. ASMs were increased by 9.2% to 35,268,149,000 in 1Q16 from 32,297,465,000 in 1Q15.

The load factor thus rose slightly – by 0.4 percentage points – to 80.5% in 1Q16 from 80.1% in 1Q15. The number of revenue passengers carried went up by 8.2% to 28,603,479 from 26,442,996 in the respective quarters.
