fastjet announces daily Johannesburg–Zanzibar flights

From 11 January 2016, fastjet will commence daily flights between Johannesburg’s O.R. Tambo International Airport and Zanzibar’s Abeid Amani Karume International Airport in response to strong passenger demand from within the South African market.Flights will depart Zanzibar at 09:30 and land in Johannesburg at 13:20, with the return leg from Johannesburg taking off at 14:10 and arriving back in Zanzibar at 19:40 (all local times). The route will operate using fastjet’s Airbus A319 aircraft with seating for up to 156 passengers. The direct flights in both directions will involve a half an hour stopover in Dar es Salaam, but passengers will not need to disembark the aircraft and all luggage will be checked directly through to its final destination.Previously, fastjet partnered with Dar es Salaam based Coastal Aviation to fly passengers to Zanzibar, but flights were restricted to daylight flights, and involved transfers and luggage collection on the ground in Dar es Salaam.“South African holiday makers wanting to fly to Zanzibar will now have a choice of departure days,” remarked Richard Bodin, fastjet’s chief commercial officer. “Affordable fares makes it easier for more tourists and other visitors to travel to Zanzibar, which in turn will boost tourism on the island and contribute significantly to Zanzibar’s’ economic growth.”
