Bhutan carrier Drukair is to buy an Airbus A320neo to add to its fleet of three A319s, with the aircraft’s CFM Leap-1A26E1 engines to be optimised for high-altitude operations.

The flag carrier for the eastern Himalayan kingdom signed a purchase agreement with Airbus for the aircraft to support its growth plans and complement its existing fleet. The aircraft will become the largest operating out of Drukair’s base in Paro, set in a challenging mountainous location at an altitude of 7,300 feet.

The A320neo will feature a two-class cabin layout and be deployed to increase the airline’s capacity on existing regional routes to Singapore, Bangkok, Kathmandu, Delhi and, Calcutta. It will be delivered in the first quarter of 2020.
