A US $961 million firm contract has been signed by Delta Air Lines with Canada’s Bombardier Commercial Aircraft to buy 20 CRJ900 regional jets.

The US carrier is also to be the launch operator of the new Atmosphere cabin for the manufacturer’s CRJ Series. The new aircraft with the Atmosphere cabin will fly under the Delta Connection brand in a two-class regional jet configuration with 70 seats, with the first to be delivered later this year.

“We are thrilled that Delta continues to select the CRJ Series as the airline looks into the future growth of its regional operations,” said Fred Cromer, president, Bombardier Commercial Aircraft. “Together with Delta, we have driven the development of regional aviation in the US, and we are looking forward to further enhancing regional air travel with the launch of the new Atmosphere cabin with our long-standing and esteemed customer.”

Montreal-based Bombardier has now recorded firm orders for 1,953 CRJ Series aircraft, including the latest order from Delta.

The new CRJ interior includes more passenger space, wheel-first roller bag capability with larger overhead bins, a more spacious lavatory, increased cabin connectivity options, mood lighting and a contemporary design and materials.
