The Cypriot airline, Cobalt Air, has suspended operations indefinitely and cancelled all flights as of the evening of 17 October.

In a statement on its website the airline said: “Cobalt regrets to announce that it will be cancelling all flights as of 23:50pm on October 17, 2018 due to indefinite suspension of Cobalt’s operations. As a result, future flights or services provided by Cobalt will be cancelled and will no longer operate.”

Passengers were urged not to go to Larnaca Airport or any departure airport as the Cobalt flights will not operate and no staff will be present, it said.

Cobalt, which has been in operation since 2016, was the largest airline from the Republic of Cyprus. The airline operated six Airbus A320 Family aircraft with destinations across Europe and the Middle East, and had growth plans for Asia and Africa.

The carrier ended its statement with: “We sincerely apologise once again and would like to thank our very loyal customers for their support over the last two years of Cobalt operations.”

Cyprus’ Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works released a statement to say officials were aiming for the “smooth and best possible operation for the repatriation of the stranded passengers, due to the cease of operations of Cobaltair Ltd.”

“The Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works exerts all efforts to minimise the inconvenience of the passengers. Finally, it expresses its deep sorrow for the cease of operations of Cobalt Air Ltd and for the inconvenience that will be caused to the passengers in the upcoming days,” it added.

Cobalt is the latest in a recent spate of airlines failing, with Primera Air entering administration at the start of October.
