Southwest Airlines has announced its preliminary traffic figures for April 2010 with the monthly load factor continuing to climb towards 80%.
The company flew 6,477,421,000 revenue passenger miles (RPMs) in April 2010, a 0.6% decrease from the 6,517,856,000 RPMs flown in April 2009. Available seat miles (ASMs), however, were cut by 2.9% to 8,215,474,000 from the April 2009 level of 8,463,511,000, which meant the load factor for the month was up 1.8 percentage points at 78.8%, compared to 77.0% for the same period last year.
Revenue passengers carried in April 2010 totalled 7,492,059 which was 0.8% fewer than the 7,551,516 carried last April. For April 2010 though, passenger revenue per ASM (RASM) is estimated to have increased in the 18%-19% range compared with April 2009.
