AirAsia is enhancing its WiFi offering, aiming to provide high-speed in-flight connectivity for passengers.
The low-cost airline is upgrading its AirAsia WiFi service, powered by ROKKI. Six aircraft operated by AirAsia Malaysia and two aircraft operated by AirAsia Thailand have been equipped with Inmarsat’s high-speed Ka-band platform, GX Aviation, which is set to be rolled out to the rest of the fleet over the next year.
“As the pioneer of LCC inflight wifi in the region, we are always looking for ways to redefine the digital inflight experience for our guests,” commented AirAsia Group president (RedBeat Ventures) Aireen Omar. “Introducing Ka-band, powered by ROKKI, is the next logical step in this process, which will allow our guests to stay connected throughout their journey and perform data-intensive activities, including live streaming.
“This also enables better real-time analytics, allowing us to serve up more personalised services to AirAsia’s 100 million guests annually,” Omar continued.
Passengers can connect to AirAsia WiFi, the airline’s IFEC platform offering free entertainment, music, games, news, and shopping, via personal devices.
With the enhanced WiFi, utilising Ka-band, it can support real-time video, music streaming and more.
Calling AirAsia’s launch of GX Aviation a “significant milestone”, Inmarsat Aviation president Philip Balaam said the company is confident the airline’s connectivity upgrade “will be warmly embraced by passengers” adding: “Our teams continue to work closely together to install GX Aviation on the rest of AirAsia’s fleet of Airbus A320 and A330 aircraft, making it available to millions of new passengers each month.”
