As of the beginning of March, passengers on SunExpress Deutschland (SunExpress) flights departing from Düsseldorf, have been able to order meals from selected local restaurants.

The trial is a collaboration involving Retail inMotion and Berlin-based food delivery start-up, foodora, which will be a front-facing brand for the partnership.

Retail inMotion will support SunExpress in the partnership through operations management, order fulfilment, logistics and analytics.

Peter Glade, chief commercial officer SunExpress commented: “If you are smaller than the others you have to be quicker! The cooperation with the start-up foodora is another proof point, of how innovation can be brought to life in a leisure airline making the passenger inflight experience more enjoyable. We are proud that we have the agility and flexibility to be the first airline partner for Retail inMotion and LSG to trial this innovative concept.”

“This is exactly the kind of innovative partnership that Retail inMotion is known for,” commented José Lirio Silva, head of Onboard Retail Europe at Retail inMotion. “By combining the high street data of foodora with Retail inMotion’s specialised onboard retail expertise and powerful technology platform, we are able to create the ultimate product portfolio for our customers’ passengers.”

The meals will be delivered and served from plates, cups to cutlery in bio materials that are made from lactic acid or sugar cane. This is only one of several initiatives at SunExpress Germany to reduce usage of plastics on board.

“In today’s world of scarce resources, climate change and the increasing environmental engagement we need not only listen to our passengers but actually introduce solutions to address their concerns”, said Kerstin Lomb, chief marketing officer at SunExpress.
