Claimed as a world first, Qantas will trial the latest in-flight entertainment (IFE) technology on board a domestic flight by streaming content to passengers’ mobile devices.
Referred to as Q Streaming and utilising wireless technology, passengers travelling in-flight on a dedicated aircraft during the trial will be able to stream inflight entertainment content to individual tablets supplied by Qantas. At a later time on the trial, passengers will also be able to use their own Wi-Fi enabled devices such as a laptop, smartphone or tablet to access the airline’s in-flight entertainment.
"We are very pleased to be the first airline in the world to trial this wireless streaming product," remarked Alison Webster, Qantas’s Executive Manager Customer Experience.
The initial six week trial of the IFE product will be on board a B767-300 and will run from the end of October through to early December this year. Following the trial, Qantas aims to provide Q Streaming across both its domestic and international fleet.
