Sri Lankan Airlines (SriLankan) will be the first carrier to introduce a new Live News & Weather app to the Thales AVANT in-flight entertainment (IFE) solution on its Airbus A330-300 fleet.
The app provides passengers with on-demand access to articles from BBC News and AFP as well as AccuWeather’s 5-day weather forecasts for 50 selected cities through the seat-back screen. The news and weather feeds are transmitted to the aircraft via satcom during flight.
Director and CEO of SriLankan Airlines, Rakhita Jayawardena, stated, “Our new A330 aircraft is designed to suit the needs of the modern-day traveller in every way. With this full-featured aircraft, we are aiming to provide a greater customer experience. Last year, SriLankan’s new A330 fleet became the launch customer for the latest Thales AVANT IFE system. Today, we are marking another first with Thales, by offering Thales AVANT Live News and Weather.”
Currently, SriLankan has four Airbus A330 aircraft in-service. The final delivery of the type to the carrier’s fleet is expected by the end of 2015.
