Emirates has received a total of seven Passenger Choice Awards at this year’s APEX EXPO in Portland, Oregon, including ‘Best Ground Experience’, ‘Best Cabin Ambience’, ‘Best IFE User Interface’, ‘Best Inflight Connectivity and Communications’, Best Food and Drink’, ‘Best in Region: Middle East’ and ‘Best Overall Passenger Experience’.
But before Emirates’ sweeping victory commenced, APEX presented some special awards. The first of these, ‘Best Achievement in Technology’, went to Gogo for company’s 2ku solution. Following this, El Al Airlines won the ‘Best Achievement in Passenger Experience’ award for Cockpit, a new high tech innovation hub that mentors entrepreneurs with ideas on how to improve the passenger experience.
Next, newly-appointed APEX CEO Joe Leader called up Sri Lankan Airline’s CEO, Rakhita Jayawardena, to receive a reward which wasn’t listed in the programme for an outstanding contribution to passenger experience. Jayawardena also made a previously unannounced speech during APEX’s educational sessions earlier that day.
Moving on, Mary Kirby and Rick Warren received awards for Outstanding Contributions to the in-flight entertainment and connectivity industry for their work on Runway Girl Network and the PMG Group retrospectively.
The ceremony then moved onto the Passenger Choice Awards. In-between Emirates’ on-going successes, Norwegian was awarded ‘Best Inflight Publication’ for its ‘N by Norwegian’ in-flight magazine, whilst Virgin America won ‘Best Inflight Video’ for the second consecutive year.
In the series of ‘Best in Region’ awards, Ethiopian Airlines took home the crown for Africa, Virgin America won its second award of the evening for being the best in the Americas, Korean Air was recognised as best in Asia and Australasia, and finally, Norwegian is also going home with two awards after being named best in Europe (the only low-fare carrier to receive commendation for passenger experience.)
The emcee of the ceremony was Rajan Datar, presenter of The Travel Show on BBC World News.
