Irkut expects Malaysian order for MS-21 as programme remains on track
Oleg Demchenko, president of Irkut Corporation and vice-president of United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) has announced that by the end of this year, UAC expects to sign an agreement for 50 MS-21 passenger aircraft for delivery to Malaysia.
Speaking at the St Petersburg International Economic Forum, he also stated that the MS-21 programme has been going "strictly to schedule".
The MS-21 is a short/mid range family of passenger airliners to accommodate 150, 180 and 210 passengers and intended to replace Tu-154 jets and obsolete western-made aircraft. Irkut claims that compared to existing types in the category the MS-21 offers 12-15% operational costs reduction. The family will be powered by Pratt & Whitney PW1000G PurePower engines featuring the geared turbofan. First deliveries are scheduled for 2016.
