Southwest Airlines has reported May 2011 traffic results for Southwest Airlines and AirTran Airways.

AirTran Airways became a wholly owned subsidiary of Southwest Airlines on 2 May 2011. For purposes of comparability, the company is providing combined traffic results for Southwest Airlines and AirTran Airways for periods prior to the acquisition date.

The company flew 9,213,061,000 revenue passenger miles (RPMs) in May 2011, compared with 8,331,545,000 combined RPMs flown in May 2010, an increase of 10.6%. Available seat miles (ASMs) increased by 4.2% to 11,142,018,000 from the May 2010 combined level of 10,694,094,000.

The load factor for the month was 82.7%, compared with the combined load factor of 77.9% in May 2010, an increase of 4.8 percentage points. Revenue passengers carried numbered 9,696,756 in May 2011, compared with 9,294,176, a 4.3% increase.
